- If it's any use, I ought to mention that I've had some similar ideas. I get
- (occaisional) feedback from the users of the MDK, and 95% of them use the
- unix-like system. Strange, that, when you consider it was really there for
- beginners :-) Still.
-
- Anyway, when I get off my backside and release it (I'm recovering from being
- employed all of a sudden), the next version of the MDK will only support the
- minixfs. It's also (at the moment) written in a shell script, so it ought to
- have none of the GFA problems I was dogged with earlier. When I get my finger
- even *more* out I'll re-write it in C++/GEM++.
-
- Major gripe: No-one has come up with any shortcomings of the MDK apart from
- 2 (below). I can't believe I got it perfect for all the people all of the time.
- Anyone any ideas on how to improve it ?
-
- [ 2 faults:
- o Zoo doesn't work on some guy's TT (fixed - now using .tar.Z)
- o Can the manual system be improved (fixed - a script-level
- system now in place that calls groff etc.)
- ]
-
- The script-version installs a subset at a time, not bits of a subset, so it's
- a little less flexible, but it's all I can do for now.
-
- Someone mentioned a standard path system - the MDK will give you that. I've
- used a /usr/users/ directory rather than a /home/<system>/ directory, but
- that (probably) won't matter, just change it if you need to.
-
- I feel that GEM can now be incorporated using the 'screen'-like system that
- Juergen Lock has written - you can run GEM on the console, and vt100's on
- virtual terminals - just like Linux!
-
- To wind up: Hopefully the MDK v2 will be out soon, and it ought to do what
- you were talking about (all the new tools have been compiled without any
- TosFs #defines etc., and all seem to work fine, apart from tclsh). If you
- have any ideas, I'd love to hear them.
-
- Simon.
-
- ps: Juergen - can I distribute a MDK setup that sets up virtual terminals
- using vcon and let people run things on the GEM console ?
